Pirx is a rocket jockey, plying the space lanes between Earth, the Moon and Mars. Flying mostly by the seat of his pants, he stumbles his way from one mishap to another. Some how he always comes out on top, much to his surprise. In Pirx Stanislaw Lem has created a likable character, smarter than he thinks he is. He shows us that if you just persevere, eventually you'll come out on the other side.
I rate this book-Tons of fun!

Tales of Pirx the Pilot Stanislaw Lem Louis Iribarne 8601406234789 Books Reviews

This is more a series of short stories than a novel, but each is an amusing tale of man and technology that anyone with an appreciation of computers will enjoy. The ending falls a bit flat but overall a very enjoyable book.
As good as it was 25+ years ago. A timeless piece of writing.
Not my favorite Lem book, but still a good read, if for no other reason than as a kind of backstory for Fiasco, which I consider along with Solaris, as Lem's masterpiece, and which I read first. Fiasco begins on a ice-bound station on Saturn's moon Titan. There is an accident. And Prix along with his would-be rescuer are frozen in stasis. Decades later, the bodies are found, but there are only enough parts to rebuild on man. Moreover, there is memory loss, so we don't know for sure if it is Prix who is resurrected or his would-be rescuer.

I enjoyed this book, but it has more in common with the American space operas of the 1960s, which Lem proclaimed to despise. I'd still recommend it as light read, but you need to be something of a Lem fan to enjoy it today, IMHO. Read Fiasco first, which is truly "speculative fiction" in its highest form.

Also, there's a fascinating Wikipedia page on Stanislaw Lem, with links to in-depth synopses on many of his novels.
Nuclear driven spaceships figure largely in this series of short stories about cadet, later pilot, Pirx.
The solar system has been conquered and is the turf of rugged men (don't remember reading about women) in a world that finds a middle ground between long haul truck drivers, adventurous seamen and the benign kind of military dictatorship that was invented by Gene Roddenberry for Star Trek.
Pirx finds himself tested as a cadet to prove himself worthy of pilothood, and helps solve various mysteries that involve the death of pilots and astronomers.

I am very fond of Stanislaw Lem for writing whacky gems like The Cyberiad, sombre stuff like Fiasco and Solaris, and especially playful A Perfect Vacuum.
Tales of Pirx the Pilot is entertaining because Lem is a good storyteller but it's mostly the curiosa of sixties-style scifi imagery and technobabble that give it both a plausible technical grounding and make it hopelessly outdated. Kind of like steampunk Thunderbirds. Atompunk should be the term for this if it was written today.
Great book!
Pirx is a likable character, and I enjoyed these stories. Lem’s writing here is humorous and playful, quite engaging. A fun, quick read.
I love these stories. I have to admit that I am very partial. I was born and raised in Poland. Lem has been my favorite SF author from the beginning and he still is. I read all these stories many times in the original and I bought the translations out of curiosity In my opinion, the translations are done very well and reflect the style of the originals quite faithfully.

The only reason I gave this book fours stars is the frequency of typos. It increases and becomes a little annoying towards the end.
