I was very happy to find Charlotte MacLeod's books published on Kindle! A Pint of Murder is the first in the Madoc Rhys series. If you are new to Charlotte MacLeod, this is one of her less popular series but it is still a great cozy mystery read. First published in 1980, the characters and action are still interesting and fresh. Charlotte MacLeod was a very talented writer with a great sense of language. A little bit of zany, a whole lot of common sense.Read order for this series:

The first appearance (as far as I can tell) of Madoc Rhys of the RCMP, as he investigates a mysterious death in a small town in Canada. Everyday life on a remote farm gets a fresh look in this quirky, sweet mystery. Charlotte MacLeod's stories are always a joy.
Everyone thinks the old lady's death was an accident. It looks like she died of botulism after eating a pint of improperly home-canned green beans, but her niece Janet has doubts. Some things just don't add up, like why the deadly green beans were neatly sliced with a knife, rather than snapped by hand as her aunt always did. When a bombastic elderly neighbor dies in another "accident," it's time to call in the Mounties.
Rhys falls for Janet long before he solves the mystery, and the reader gets to know some great characters along the way.
At the story’s start the atmosphere presented as noxious and squalid, with everyone as nasty and negative as could be. Toward the end, it shifted to an old-fashioned sweet romance. I’ve read that a book should start with the same feeling that it presents throughout the book. In this case, the shift in atmosphere is odd, but nice.
The main character is very likeable and the romantic ending is strongly foreshadowed but still satisfying. The whodunit is a shock, but in retrospect one sees the clues. Overall, a cool book.
The slang is interesting. I wouldn’t expect that sort of slang to be used in a rural backwater such as this is set in but in a city. There is no explanation provided.
I just bought a new copy of this, because the old one fell apart. It's the first book of a lively and often hilarious mystery series set in modern Canada. All of them are very pleasant reading, being well and tightly plotted with engaging characters. I would recommend any of them as highly as this one.
I enjoyed reading this book, it was a fun escape from some of the more gruesome thrillers set in modern day. Nice little mystery, likable characters, and a satisfying conclusion.
It did seem to take a little while to get going (I don't think Madoc entered the book til over halfway through) and it seemed weird to me that Rhys was only 21 years old... she seemed much more worldly and knowledgeable than 21, especially since she had been in the workforce rather than at college in time preceding the book's events.
One of my pet peeves is spending pages speculating about who might have done it. Usually this seems to be done when the author hasn't laid a sufficient real trail. I knew who had done it from the beginning which I very rarely do. And of course no one ever speculated on that possibility, it would have been too obvious. Also didn't follow the document theory, can't see how that would have worked.
After reading reviews, I bought this book. It was the Canadian aspect that drew me to it; plus the murder mystery aspect. I found the book to be an enjoyable read. I loved Janet. By the way she was described, I figured her to be middle age. She is a great homemaker, baker and keeps everyone fed. I also loved the person that came into her life as the book progresses. Interesting how the first murder occurred or was it murder? It could have just been an accidental poisoning.
This book contains several quirky characters. Each one could be accused of the crime. The writer keeps you guessing right up to the end. Good way to go.
I have since found out that the main character and her love interest are carried on into several crime novels that take place in Canada. I look forward to trying another of this author's books with them in it.
A delightful Whodunit set in a remote village in Canada, A Pint of Murder was published originally in 1980, but has been recently resurrected by mystery lovers who now offer it digitally through Open Road Media, which is how I came across it.
Janet Wadman has temporarily returned to the family farm in Pitcherville, New Brunswick, Canada to help out while her sister-in-law is recovering from surgery. One sleepless night she sees the doctor's car at the neighboring farm and goes to check on her elderly neighbor, Agatha Treadway. But Agatha is already dead on the floor and the doctor says he is sure it is food poisoning...the deadly botulism, as a matter of fact.
Ms. Treadway had been canning and eating her own food from her own cellar for decades, and Janet does not believe Ms. Treadway, even at age 87, would have made a careless mistake in the canning process. Her visiting niece Marion Emery had eaten supper with Ms. Treadway, but had not shared the green beans. The doctor left with the jar, saying he would send the jar to the lab for processing. The next day Janet was back helping Marion and was down in the cellar where she observes a second jar of green beans which had been cut, not snapped, as Ms. Treadway had always prepared them.
She quickly calls the doctor's home to find out if the jar he was sending to the lab had cut or snapped beans in it, but Janet only gets to make an appointment to visit later that day, as she did not want to leave a message which might be overheard on the party line in their small gossipy town.
But Janet was never going to get to ask the doctor that question. When she enters his office, she discovers his body where he apparently slipped on a rug and hit his head on the edge of the desk.
But is that really what happened? Janet notices that his head has a rounded indention at the site of the mortal wound, not an angular one which the desk would have made. Sleepy little Pitcherville may have a murderer in their midst...is it time to call in the Mounties?
