This was one of those rare novels. It's beautifully and simply written. The story is gripping. The characters are heart wrenching. The author turns each encounter almost into it's own short story. The emotions are so raw and real they stay with you for days. I can't really say enough good things about this story except that if you have Eastern European Jewish heritage it is even more real and more poignant but that is definitely not a must.

a compelling novel with a story of an immigrant who returns to Russia to find a child she thinks may still be alive. special because of the writing style which is punchy, moves back and forth in time and point of view, keeps the reader on her/his toes. a skilled writer investigating an unusual theme.
Clever but I couldn’t figure out the point, so I didn’t finish it.
Amy Bloom takes the kernel of truth that a woman trekked up the Telegraph trail in Alaska to Siberia in the 1920's and tries to imagine what could drive anyone to do that. Love, and love of a daughter. And then Bloom creates the most amazing characters, and story, with excruciating beauty and truth. It is rough, and one of my friends found parts sordid, and yes That's so also, so do watch out... but it is so real, and the main character so lovely and true and brave, and some of the people who love her are so great, and the stories are riveting. I hope you will love it half as much as I do. I think it is purely amazing, and a gift about the richness of love and people and why we go on living.
My book club chose this book as its September selection. It's the epic tale of Lilian Leyb who emigrates to America after her husband, parents, and, she thinks, her child are killed in a Russian pogrom. Lilian makes a new life working as a seamstress for a Yiddish theater and becoming mistress to both her boss's son and her boss. But when Lilian learns her child is still alive and living in Siberia she makes a cross country trip to Alaska and attempts to cross the Bering Straits to find her child. The author has an interesting, short-hand method of storytelling, so this is not the 800 page tome one would expect. The ending is also not what one would expect, but it is an amazing, and yet fairly plausible story which I really enjoyed reading. I listened to the audio book version. It was very well done.
This tale about a 22 year old jewish emigre fleeing from the death & destruction of the Russian pogroms to the lower east side of NYC would make a good adventure movie. I prefer seeing action, sex & adventure on the screen. This is not a character driven novel. I loved the Jewish flavor, the Yiddish inflections, and the background of the once thriving Yiddish theatre culture. However, when Lillian leaves to trek through the Yukon and Alaska, the author lost me. I finished the book, but believed my time would have been better spent elsewhere. The author uses the historical information available to her about a woman who walks the telegraph trail alone. There is little data and this book is a work of fiction. I thought the structure of the story was unrealistic. One reviewer wrote that Amy Bloom is really a short story writer. That makes perfect sense. Actually, this book may have been divided into two completely different tales each with a different heroine. It may even have been divided into three stories- her emigration and establishment in NYC, her relationship with father & son thespians, Meyer & Reuban, and the trek to Alaska.
Amy Bloom's "Away" is an excellent contemporary example of the "picaresque" novel, which according to Wikipedia, refers to "an episodic recounting of the adventures of an anti-hero on the road." It's the journey, not the destination. The central character is shaped by all that she encounters along the way, and she has her own influence, as well, on the people that she meets.

Not many picaresque novels have a woman as a central character, and Bloom makes the most of her character's gender. In America on the road in the 1920s, in the working-class environment, sex was both a commonplace and a commodity. Lillian learns this lesson quickly and uses it to her best advantage. She's neither totally straight nor totally lesbian, simply whatever works for her at the given moment. Like many heroes and anti-heroes, she lives by her wits. Even though she is separated by death and distance from her entire family, she makes a life for herself.

It is true that many secondary characters seem to come and go and are not especially well developed, but the same is true of most characters in novels of this type, such as Kerouac's "On the Road," Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and Cervantes' "Don Quixote." I am not saying that "Away" has the permanent literary value of these works but that it should be understood in the same tradition.
The main character,Lillian, suffers continuously as she travels from her pogrom wracked village in Balarus. She lost her entire family and way of life in that village and seeks a new life in the US. The story follows her struggles to recover her 4 year old daughter, Sophie, based on a rumor that Sophie may have survived the pogrom. Lillian's determination, courage and willingness to suffer in order to recover her missing child lead the reader through a jungle of adventures, near death experiences, and heartwarming relationships along her quest for Sophie. The story is peppered with humor and yiddishisms.
The author provides a degree of closure for each chapter by spelling out the futures of those Lillian leaves behind on her journey to recover Sophie. In this respect, the novel is structured like a series of short stories with a common central character, Lillian.
